Dr. Phil Under Fire For Asking Twitter If It’s OK To Have Sex With Drunk Girls

Dr. Phil McGraw is mostly known for his inoffensive, vaguely self-help-driven lectures on his pop-psychology show “Dr. Phil,” but on Tuesday, the television host came under fire online after posting a tweet that seemed to support sexual assault.

“If a girl is drunk, is it OK to have sex with her? Reply yes or no to @DrPhil #teensaccused,” Dr. Phil tweeted out to his million-plus followers on Monday night. Legally, of course, drunk people are not capable of consenting to sex, making such an encounter rape. The post exploded on Twitter and immediately drew backlash for giving a voice to supporters of sexual assault and generally misunderstanding the concept of consent.

Not long after, Dr. Phil deleted the offending tweet, but it lived on in screengrabsand the hundreds of retweets and responses it received.

Why Do Women Sext? “Sex – Texting”

I’ll admit it. I privately make some judgments about a woman who would want to sext with Anthony Weiner. I mean, really, with the waxed chest? But that’s a personal aesthetic bias and my judgment is about as serious as the kind I would make against a woman dating a man wearing a polo and plaid shorts. I couldn’t stand it, but to each their own. That’s kind of the thing about sexuality: People are different.

But a New York Times Op-Ed this week failed to appreciate that. Susan Jacoby, who is typically a brilliant writer and thinker, argued that when it comes to the Weiner scandal not enough attention has been paid to “the role of women in a coarse and creepy Internet culture dedicated to the fulfillment of both male and female desires for virtual carnal knowledge.” (I guess the unabashed slut-shaming directed at these women doesn’t count as attention?) In addition, she wondered “why hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of women apparently derive gratification from exchanging sexual talk and pictures with strangers.”

It struck me as a classic example of defensive sexuality in which any desires that are not one’s own are seen as a threat that needs to be neutralized. Most people engage in this to a degree, including myself. But, more important, it occurred to me that her piece presented an opportunity for education. Sure, I could hammer out a snarky takedown of her piece, and that might be fun, but why not instead make an earnest attempt at actually answering her question. Why do some women (::puts on robot voice::) “derive gratification from exchanging sexual talk and pictures with strangers”?

Well, here’s the short answer: “For the same reason men do” says Anna Pulley, 30, an Oakland-based writer and a friend of mine. That is perhaps the most important point to be made here — but she adds, obligingly, “It’s risk-free, titillating, provides masturbation fodder and you can control the terms of exchange.”

You might wonder, though: Why not just look at porn? “A lot of the draw comes from the knowledge, or at least illusion, that someone out there is creating this photo expressly for you,” says Lux Alptraum, CEO of the sex blog Fleshbot. “Sexted photos might be blurry or poorly lit, but there’s something appealing about knowing that they were taken just for you.” Jacoby denigrates this as “just a form of one-on-one pornography,” but Alptraum sees this as “actually a pretty awesome concept.” Why wouldn’t you want sexual content that is, as she puts it, “being created for, and transmitted directly to, you”? That’s why she has occasionally sexted with people she knows, as well as “people who I don’t know but am flirting with,” she says.

Of course, sexy selfies don’t just excite the recipient — they can also be validating for the sender. “Jacoby couched this in really negative terms,” says Alptraum, “but for me, if you’re approaching it with an awareness of what the extent of the relationship is, I don’t really see why there’s any problem with having fun sending and receiving naked photos.”

“Carol,” 34, from Long Island City, has regularly exchanged emails and texts for the last few months with someone she met on the Internet. They exchange photos — sometimes shots from commercial porn that turn them on — and share “sexual messages while taking turns masturbating,” she says. “There’s no physical interaction, so there’s less of a limitation as far as fantasies can go,” she says. “Because of that awareness, it is easier for me to get off on sexual ideas that may be more ridiculous if they played out physically.” (She gives an example: “having one’s eyes taped shut during sex.”) There’s also little chance of awkwardly running into this person in real life, which is so often guaranteed with someone you meet in the course of your “real” day-to-day life.

Apltraum agrees that a major draw is the freedom of fantasy.”I think online sex is, in many ways, a form of enhanced masturbation,” says Alptraum. “It’s driven more by your fantasies than by the presence of an actual person, there’s an ability to be more focused on your own pleasure than you might be in physical sex, and the distance — and, at times, anonymity — can make it easier to explore things you might feel nervous about discussing during an in-person encounter.”

It may be fashionable to lament the ways in which technology is taking over our lives, but I found very little sympathy for Jacoby’s assertion that online sex “resembles the substitution of texting for extended, face-to-face time with friends.” Pulley, who has turned to online sex talk with “plenty of people” that she has just met or started dating, argues, “That’s the same line of thinking as those who believe casual sex leads to the depletion of one’s ability to emotionally bond with people,” she says. “One’s sexual sense of self-worth doesn’t hinge on whether fantasies are expressed in one’s head, in a journal or through digital means.” She compares it to all kind of real-world flirting that couples engage in. “Technologically enhanced, consensual foreplay is no more ‘scandalous’ than other non-electronic kinds,” she says. It’s just one of the many ways that we now have to relate to one another.

Besides, sex isn’t any one thing.  As Alptraum puts it, “sex can be fun in a variety of iterations, for a variety of reasons,” she says. “The sex you have because you’re in love is different from the sex you have because you’re horny is different from the sex you have over the Internet.” She adds, “They’re all valid and worthwhile forms of sexual experience.”

Porn vs. Real Sex: Watch The Video

This may come as a shocker, but porn is different from real sex.

Thanks to the Internet, porn is everywhere, and that sets many of us up for someunrealistic expectations in the horizontal hustle.

While real sex can be a passion-filled journey sending sky rockets in flight, some afternoons don’t end in delight, just some extremely awkward moments.

New York film production company Kornhaber Brown compares porn stars and regular Joes, side by side. Of course, they need a lot of bananas, sliced papaya and other food as stand-ins for those body parts that make porn stars famous.

The video quotes some startling — and disturbing — facts. One that jumps out: “In real life 75 percent of men ejaculate within 3 minutes.”

Perhaps that’s why, “71 percent of all women can’t orgasm through penetration.”

Indeed, porn sometimes seems to make real sex seem like really lame sex.

Huffpost contacted Kornhaber Brown for the sources of that info. A spokeswoman was less than forthcoming.

“While the stats are based on credible sources, such as Jon Millward’s Deep Insidestudy, we’d rather stay out of a discussion about scientific, sexual health or social impact issues.” Gillian Weeks, Head of Sales and Development said in an email.

“We just made this for fun.”

Then again, how much fun can you have in three minutes?

Don’t Drive Over The Couple Having Sex In The Driveway

A couple allegedly having sex on a driveway fled the scene when the residents caught them in the act.

A Sugarcreek resident told police they were trying to leave their driveway Saturday, but found two people in the driveway engaging in a sexual act, according to police.

Police said the incident allegedly happened around 5:15 p.m. on the 2000 block of Upper Bellbrook Road near Indian Ripple Road.

“We just thought it was hilarious that two people would do that when someone was home,” said Gary Welborn, the homeowner who called police. “We’re in the middle of nowhere, pretty much!”

Beavercreek police were asked by Sugarcreek authorities to look for the suspects, according to law enforcement.

Sugarcreek police said they assume the alleged lovers were consenting adults.

Jason Sudeikis says making love to Olivia Wilde helped him to lose weight.

The 37-year-old actor credits his gorgeous fiancée, who previously revealed they ”have sex like Kenyan marathon runners”, for helping him to slim down by enjoying daily workouts with him under the sheets..

The ‘Saturday Night Live’ star told the August issue of ELLE magazine: ”The truth is, I’m not getting up an hour earlier and walking on a treadmill. I have the greatest workout partner in the world. And you don’t need a gym membership for that kind of workout.”

Jason, who began dating the 29-year-old actress in November 2011, has also made a number of changes to his diet.

He explained: ”A lot of it comes from tiny things, like not eating barbecue sauce with my pizza at two in the morning. I think it’s all a manifestation of being happy and wanting to treat myself well.”

Despite being comfortable to share details of his love life, Jason admits losing his virginity was scarier than his first appearance on the comedy sketch series.

He said: ”Sex was probably scarier. I wasn’t as concerned that my parents were going to walk in in the middle of my first sketch. There are security guards there. That’s a big part of it.”

Jason and Olivia, who announced their engagement in January, reportedly plan to tie the knot in New York next spring.

Girl Sex On Campus, She’s Just Looking For A Friend With Benefits

At 11 on a weeknight earlier this year, her work finished, a slim, pretty junior at the University of Pennsylvania did what she often does when she has a little free time. She texted her regular hookup — the guy she is sleeping with but not dating. What was he up to? He texted back: Come over. So she did. They watched a little TV, had sex and went to sleep.

“We don’t really like each other in person, sober,” she said, adding that “we literally can’t sit down and have coffee.”

Ask her why she hasn’t had a relationship at Penn, and she won’t complain about thedeath of courtship or men who won’t commit. Instead, she’ll talk about “cost-benefit” analyses and the “low risk and low investment costs” of hooking up.

“I positioned myself in college in such a way that I can’t have a meaningful romantic relationship, because I’m always busy and the people that I am interested in are always busy, too,” she said.

“And I know everyone says, ‘Make time, make time,’ ” said the woman, who spoke on the condition of anonymity but agreed to be identified by her middle initial, which is A. “But there are so many other things going on in my life that I find so important that I just, like, can’t make time, and I don’t want to make time.”

It is by now pretty well understood that traditional dating in college has mostly gone the way of the landline, replaced by “hooking up” — an ambiguous term that can signify anything from making out to oral sex to intercourse — without the emotional entanglement of a relationship.

Until recently, those who studied the rise of hookup culture had generally assumed that it was driven by men, and that women were reluctant participants, more interested in romance than in casual sexual encounters. But there is an increasing realization that young women are propelling it, too.

But others, like Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna and mother who in March wrote a letter to The Daily Princetonian urging female undergraduates not to squander the chance to hunt for a husband on campus, say that de-emphasizing relationships in college works against women.Hanna Rosin, in her recent book, “The End of Men,” argues that hooking up is a functional strategy for today’s hard-charging and ambitious young women, allowing them to have enjoyable sex lives while focusing most of their energy on academic and professional goals.

“For most of you, the cornerstone of your future and happiness will be inextricably linked to the man you marry, and you will never again have this concentration of men who are worthy of you,” advised Ms. Patton, who has two sons, one a Princeton graduate and the other a current student. In many places, Ms. Patton was derided for wanting to return to the days of the “Mrs. degree,” though a few female writers, noting how hard it can be for women to find mates in their 30s, suggested that she might have a point. (Ms. Patton just landed a book deal with a division of Simon & Schuster.)

As lengthy interviews over the school year with more than 60 women at Penn indicated, the discussion is playing out in the lives of a generation of women facing both broader opportunities and greater pressures than perhaps any before, both of which helped shape their views on sex and relationships in college.

Typical of elite universities today, Penn is filled with driven young women, many of whom aspire to be doctors, lawyers, politicians, bankers or corporate executives like Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg or Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer. Keenly attuned to what might give them a competitive edge, especially in a time of unsure job prospects and a shaky economy, many of them approach college as a race to acquire credentials: top grades, leadership positions in student organizations, sought-after internships. Their time out of class is filled with club meetings, sports practice and community-service projects. For some, the only time they truly feel off the clock is when they are drinking at a campus bar or at one of the fraternities that line Locust Walk, the main artery of campus.

Having Sex Affects Your Satisfaction, Study Finds

Your motivation for having sex really affects how satisfied you feel.

At least, that’s what a new study out of the University of Toronto found. In a paper published this month in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, a research team led by social psychologist Amy Muise investigated two motivations for having sex:

1. “Approach” goals like increasing intimacy and experiencing pleasure.
2. “Avoidance” goals like not disappointing a partner.

They found that these motivations determined how much satisfaction an individual derived from his or her sexual experience.

In one experiment, researchers recruited 517 participants who had previously been in a sexual relationship and presented them with one of eight possible scenarios involving a couple. In some scenarios, one partner engaged in sex to “feel closer to their partner,” in others to “avoid disappointing their partner.” Participants were than asked to rate the partner’s relationship satisfaction, sexual satisfaction and level of sexual desire on a scale of 1-7. The researchers found that participants believed those who had sex to “feel closer to their partner” would have higher levels of relationshipand sexual satisfaction.

In a second experiment, researchers recruited 108 heterosexual couples from an unnamed Canadian university. Each participant completed a background survey and a 14-day “daily experience” study. According to the paper:

On days when people engaged in sex for approach goals… they experienced greater relationship and sexual satisfaction, but on days when people engaged in sex for avoidance goals, they experienced lower relationship and sexual satisfaction.

The researchers conducted two further experiments, both of which confirmed the original findings.

So, what can we take away from this study? Having sex to please someone else is not a good idea — it detracts from your own satisfaction, and can affect how you feel about your relationship over time.

Previous research has looked at why people have sex, but Muise’s study is one of the first to investigate how motivation translates into satisfaction. A study from 2007 identified 237 different reasons why people have sex, ranging from attraction and excitement to revenge and attention.

Researchers have also looked at whether men and women have sex for difference reasons. Under the direction of Dr. Cindy Meston, the Sexual Psychophysiology Laboratory at the University of Texas at Austin identified a number of reasons why people pursue sex. They found little difference in motivation between genders. In April 2013, Meston told author Kayt Sukel: “The top three reasons for having sex were the same in both genders — they were having it for love, for commitment, and for physical gratification.”

Sex Museums? My Stripper Friend Told Me

Once I found out they existed I did a little research. Here what I found.

I decided to put together a list of the world’s sex museums. Even if you can’t pay a visit, their websites are informative and loaded with photos of exhibits.

Erotic Heritage Museum, Las Vegas 
The somewhat bizarre collaboration of a “Preacher and a Pornographer,” this pleasure palace houses over 17,000 square feet of artistically expressive erotica. Behold, ye Larry Flynt and “Ho-Down Mural” exhibitions.

Sex Machines Museum, Prague
A museum devoted entirely to the history and display of, to quote the website, “mechanical erotic appliances, the purpose of which is to bring pleasure and allow extraordinary and unusual positions during intercourse.” There’s also a small theater for viewing old erotic cinema.

Museum of Sex, New York
It may not be the among the best-known of the city’s museums, but this monument to sex education, history, and cultural significance isn’t just for academics. It’s a good time, too. With rotating exhibits and virtual installations on everything from the “Sex Lives of Animals” and “Kink,” to a tribute to American pin-up photography, there’s something for everyone. Don’t forget to stop at the OralFix Aphrodisiac Cafe for an erotic elixir.

Sexmuseum Amsterdam
The Dutch are known for their rather laid-back attitude toward things the rest of the world tends to frown upon, which is one reason they’re so much fun. The famed “Venustempel” in Amsterdam is focused on “the theme of sensual love.” And hey–the four euro entry fee is a lot cheaper than the Red Light District.

Museu de l’erotica, Barcelona
Dedicated to the exploration of erotica in all its various forms: anthropological, archaeological, sociological, artistic, literary, and something called “plastic arts.” Hm. Located in Barcelona’s architecturally stunning LaRambla neighborhood.

The Icelandic Phallological Museum, Husavik (northern island)
This collection of over “two hundred and nine penises and penile parts” represents nearly all of the land and marine animals native to Iceland. The museum provides a base for modern research on the study of phallology.

World Erotic Art Museum, Miami
WEAM is home to the largest collection of erotic art in the United States, including sculpture and art objects. Rest assured it’s a lot more tasteful than what you’ll see parading on Ocean Drive.Musee de l’Erotisme, Paris

Condom Museum, Nonthaburi (approximately one hour from…Bangkok)
The Ministry of Public Health opened this little museum, located in the Department of Medical Sciences building, in 2010. Its purpose is to develop awareness about HIV/AIDS and eliminate negative public perception about condom use (ironic, given that Thailand is the world’s largest producer of condoms).
